PGM Golf Resort Okinawa
The warm climate makes Okinawa are prime choice for a golf holiday in Japan. Okinawa is a Japanese Prefecture which includes over 150 islands in the East China Sea. The stunning beaches and coral reefs attract visitors from all over the world but the golf courses are also one of the leading attractions. PGM Golf Resort is a great example and this and the golf course can be found on the main island of the prefecture, also called Okinawa. PGM Golf Resort is an hour away from Naha Airport and very easy to reach along the E58 road. PGM Golf Resort opened in April 2017 following a series of renovations which have made a huge difference to the playing experience at this venue. There are three sets of 9 holes, making the golf course 27 holes in total and you combine any two sets of 9 holes to make a complete round of golf. The three individual sets of 9 holes have been named Hibiscus Course, Deigo Course and Bougainvillea Course. All three enjoy an enviable location on the coast and there are tremendous views of the East China Sea, the Harukabu Peninsula and Ie Island. Professional golfer, Isao Aoki, was on hand to help with the renovation of the golf course and he has helped to produce a fantastic playing environment. The remodelling of the course has made PGM Golf Resort a tougher test of golf, with mounding, water and bunkering offering a more strategic challenge than ever before. There is a choice of four tee boxes on each hole, making it suitable for players of all abilities. The first hole on the Deigo Course gives players a good idea of what to expect when playing at PGM Golf Resort. It is a par-5 hole and plays downhill, towards the East China Sea. There is plenty of mounding to deal with on this hole and it plays to 518 yards from the back tee. There is out of bounds on both sides of the fairway but it is wide enough not to have to worry too much about that. Having found the fairway off the tee, you have the option of attacking the green or laying up on the fairway in-front of the green. There is a strategically placed bunker protecting the front of the green so you cannot afford to be short on your approach to a large green. You will see water throughout the 27 holes but it only really comes into play on a few holes. The bunkers and mounds are the main obstacles at PGM Golf Resort. In addition to the golf course, the clubhouse at PGM Golf Resort has also enjoyed a facelift. Inside the luxurious building you will find a restaurant, pro shop, locker rooms, bathing area and even a gallery. PGM Golf Resort has developed into a world class golf resort and is a must-play when in Okinawa.\n\nempty

Emerald Coast Golf Links
Okinawa Prefecture is home to some of the best golf courses in Japan. The prefecture has over 100 different islands Including one of the largest islands, which is called Miyakojima. Also known as simply Miyako island, it is the biggest and most populous island Among the Miyako islands of Okinawa Prefecture.\nThe tropical climate makes Miyako island a great place for a holiday and the perfect location for a round of golf. One of the top golf courses on the island is Emerald Coast Golf Links which was established in 1988. Located on the South Coast of Miyako island, Emerald Coast Golf Links provides lovely views of the ocean throughout the round. You will struggle to find a better location for a round of golf anywhere in Japan.\nReaching Emerald Coast Golf Links is easy thanks to the direct flights available from Tokyo. The 18 hole par-72 golf course please to just over 6400 yards from the back tee but there are three tee boxes to choose from on each hole. Five of the first nine holes have an ocean view with the 5th hole considered to be the toughest of the outward nine.\nThe 5th hole is a par-4 which plays to 377 yards from the back tee and features water along the right side of the fairway. There is also out of bounds on the left of the fairway so playing an accurate tee shot is more important than distance on this hole. The fairway narrows considerably close to the landing area so club selection is important when considering this fact.\nTwo bunkers protect the triangular shaped green, one on the left side and one on the right side of the putting surface.\nWater comes into play on several holes at Emerald Coast Golf Links, with the 6th hole being a good example. This par-4 hole has three separate bodies of water along the right side of the fairway and the approach shot to the green must be played over water. The long green is protected by three bunkers.\nArguably the most spectacular hole on the golf course is the 16th. This features a tee shot which must be played over the ocean to the fairway on the other side. The fairway is wide but the pressure is on and if the wind picks up this can be a very testing tee shot. Emerald Coast Golf Links maybe mostly flat throughout but there are many strategic challenges to overcome.\nHaving completed a round of golf, you can enjoy a fine meal in the clubhouse restaurant. There are lovely views of the ocean and golf course from the clubhouse which you can enjoy while eating your food.\n\nempty

Tomakomai Golf Resort 72 - Emina Golf Club
The Tomakomai Golf Emina Club is a beautiful golf resort boasting 4 golf courses set within the beautiful Japanese country side. Each course has its own unique character, offering 4 unique golfing experiences. The South Course measures 6852-yards and meanders through beautiful white birch, water hazards and bunkers, creating a challenging but highly enjoyable and picturesque golf course. At 7051-yards The East Course is a long hitters course with long holes and wide fairways offering the chance to open the shoulders. A delightful course that will test your ability from the tee and with the inclusion of water hazards you will need to be accurate to boot. Emina West Course presents a much more technical challenge for golfers to enjoy. At 6877-yards from the back tees the course demands accuracy and good course management. The fourth and final course at Tomakomai Golf Emina Club is the Iris course. It is much shorter than the other three courses at 6541-yards, and coupled with the wide fairways and fewer trees, the Iris course is more forgiving and perfect for beginners and less experienced golfers. A modern clubhouse combines the modern requirements golfers expect with Japanese tradition, creating an incredibly relaxing atmosphere. The North Country Golf Club
The North Country Club on the Hokkaido Island of Japan is located just 15 minutes from Chitose Airport and boasts a wonderful 18-hole golf course that is presented throughout the golfing season in pristine condition. Designed by Isao Aoki, the course was opened in 1990 quickly gaining recognition for its simplistic design. At 7078-yards the 18-hole par 72 course is links-like in style. In comparison to other courses in the region, The North Country Club stands out as different, with few trees or hidden water hazards to test the golfer. Instead Aoki has created a stunning layout from the natural landscape and has sparingly used water hazards to achieve a testing course that is different each time you play it. North Country Club is, as many links courses are, at mercy to the wind and it is this that makes it stand out. No two rounds are the same here, and golfers will be challenged by the everchanging winds. Greens are well laid out and of high quality, as are the wide and generous fairways. Immense bunkers frame the rolling fairways perfectly. Clubhouse facilities are of high standard with a well-stocked professional shop, locker rooms, swimming pool and restaurant serving local delicacies and international dishes. The driving range and short game practice facilities complete the offering at North Country\n\nempty

Sunpark Sapporo Golf Club
Sun Park Sapporo Golf Course in Hokkaido is a golf course owned and operated by Pacific Golf Management and is located about 30 minutes from the centre of Sapporo. The course offers 27 holes spread over a large area with few elevation change but the holes are interspersed by plenty of water hazards of various sizes. The course is not too difficult with very wide fairways and greens without too much protection in the way of bunkers. The pick of the holes on the East course are the par-3, 3rd hole where you tee off from a tee box surrounded by water and carry over the hazard to a green around 170 yards away. The 9th hole is a shortish par 4 which skirts the edge of the water hazard as you approach the green so you need to play over the water with your approach to reach in regulation. The 7th hole on the south courses requires water carry off the tee to reach the fairway and then the water hazard skirts the left edge of the fairway all the way to the green. The 2nd hole on the West courses is avery long par-5 with water along the left and bunkers both sides of the fairway. The 8th is a long par-4 with another carry over water from the tee box and a large bunker protecting the right side of the green. The facilities, food and service in the clubhouse are excellent as you expect in Japan.\n\nempty

Shin-Chitose Country Club
Shin-Chitose Country Club is a very popular course not far from the international airport and around 30 minutes from the centre of Sapporo set in a very hilly location with wonderful scenery. It is a 36-hole layout - the Hamanasu Course is a very tough course where each hole is separated by the white birch trees and Karamatsu, which has plenty of elevation changes and undulations together with numerous water hazards. The pick of the holes on the outward nine of the Hamanasu Course include the par, 4th with a large pond protecting he front of the green and the b7th which is a short dogleg par 4 with pond along the left waiting for the mishit approach. On the inward half the par3, 15th demand an accurate tee shot over a valley to a well-protected green. The final 18th is the toughest hole on the Hermanus course as the green has 3 tiers and several undulations – a bogey is a good score here. On the other hand, the Holoca course is a highly strategic course that demands accurate shot making because the fairways are very narrow and there are numerous bunkers protecting the greens. The most dangerous holes include the 7th, which although it’s quite a short par 4, requires you to flirt with danger to get in the right position off the tee. The elevated green on the 13ht is difficult to hold and you can easily drop shots here.\n\nempty

Sapporo Minami Golf Club
The spectacular golf course at Sapporo Minami is an absolute must visit if you are ever in the area. A backdrop of mountain ranges, native trees and woodland set the course off beautifully offering breath-taking views and an air of tranquillity that you can only find in the Japanese countryside. The course weaves and undulates across the natural terrain and is by no means out of place. The designer of the original course, Chen Shimizu laid the foundations of what was to become one of the most prestigious golf courses in Japan. It was remodelled by Taro Kawada and the changes only served to increase the incredible beauty and also the challenge that the course presented to members and visitors alike. Standing on the first tee you see the beauty and spectacular landscape in all its glory, but you quickly need to focus on the task at hand. The start is tough, from the elevated tee you can see the well-protected green in the distance, the narrowing fairway flanked by trees and out of bounds to the right. It doesn´t become easier, the third is a 202-yard par 3 with a large bunker guarding the entrance to the green club selection is vital here. A particular delight is the clever use of the natural terrain, and the natural valleys are lined with beautiful blooming tress that add to the aesthetics of Sappora Minami Golf Club. Densely wooded the trees play a part in the difficulty of the course, but add mystery, they frame the holes exquisitely and create a sense of being alone on the course. The elevated tee on the thirteenth offers panoramic views of the mountains in the distance. Playing downhill, the hole plays much shorter than the card suggests and this opens up the chance of making birdie. Each hole at Sapporo Minami presents its own unique challenge, and there are no weak holes. Regardless of your ability level you will be tested at this golf course. You will not be disappointed by the course, or the facilities. The practice facilities are kept to the same exacting standard of the golf course and include a well-equipped driving range, an approach green and a putting green. Clubhouse facilities are good, although not as modern as some of the other courses and resorts in Japan, but it blends perfectly with the traditional layout of the golf course. Boasting spacious locker rooms, swimming pool and sauna guests have the chance to relax before or after their rounds. A warm welcome from the attentive staff is always on hand. The club restaurant serves local and international dishes in a relaxed environment. Located about 45 minutes from Chitose International Airport the course s ideally located for international and local visitors with great road links. This is a course not to be missed.\n\nempty

Perhaps the most favoured course here is the West course. At 6734-yards it is the longest of the three courses and also boasts a par of 72. The stand out hole of the resort is without doubt the par 3 third of The West course, measuring 182-yards from the elevated back tee, you are afforded a perfect view of the island green below, simply stunning. Similar to the East and South the West´s main protection are the narrow tree-lined fairways, with strategically positioned bunkers and the occasional water hazard. Niseko Golf Course
A two-hour drive from the New Chitose Airport you will come across the Niseko Golf Course. As a sister course to the Niseko Village layout, Niseko golf course was designed by legendary American golfer Arnold Palmer. Measuring 6805-yards from the championship tees, the Niseko Golf Club is a true test of golfing ability. The majority of golfers will and most definitely should play from the forward tees, as the difficulty of the course is high. Deep, punishing rough and out of bounds on almost every hole, the championship tees demand both length and accuracy if you want to post a good score here. A particular delight are the long par threes with the shortest measuring 189-yards. Palmer´s use of water hazards, the natural landscape in the shadow of Mount Yotei and the devilishly positioned bunkers guarding both fairway and greens make Niseko Golf Course a superb choice for golfers looking for the ultimate challenge. A large double-tiered driving range completes the wonderful off-course facilities. Makomanai Golf and Country Club boasts two beautifully designed courses, The Algae and The Kuranuma Courses. Both parkland layouts the courses are open to all and offer a great chance to enjoy the natural beauty of Japan. The Kuranuma course measures 6874-yards from the back tees, and like the Algae course has a choice of 4 tee blocks, choose your tee according to your handicap level and you will have a very enjoyable round. Trees line all the holes, creating an environment most pleasurable. The fairways are in general wide and inviting. The greens are all well protected, by numerous bunkers that frame the generally small greens. It is not a difficult track by any means, water only comes into play on a couple of holes, making this ideal for beginners. The Algae course is a little shorter at 6684-yards but is probably the more demanding of the two layouts. Water much like the Kuranuma course, is rare, although it does come into play at the 212-yard par 3 thrd hole. The hole requires a carry over the pond which sits short of the green, tress again frame the hole. The eighth hole is interesting with the course having the option of utilizing a second green to change the complexity of the par five, which can be attacked by longer hitters. Another hole that can be attacked is the short par four ninth, at just 304-yards from the back tee it is a definite chance to finish the loop with a birdie. Bunkers are well positioned around the greens to add to the difficulty of the approach shots. Mature and well maintained both courses are enjoyable to play and offer a sufficient challenge to keep all levels of golfer entertained. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.\n\nempty

Kosaido Sapporo Country Club
Kosaido Sapporo Country Club is a very picturesque course which is not too far from the centre of Sapporo so this is a popular course with locals. The course winds its way through the attractive countryside and offer great views from the top of the course.\nThe fairways are quite undulating and its not easy to find a flat lie- also, at certain times of the year the rough can get quite thick.\nThe course is not too difficult providing you can keep out of the pot bunkers which are scattered across the course and once you get in you will probably lose a shot. The course was designed by Peter Thomson and perhaps he had some thoughts of St. Andrews when building the course\n\nempty

Hokkaido Golf Club
Hokkaido is the northern island of Japan and a great place to visit for those who love nature, skiing and playing golf. You will find a wealth of golf courses available to play in Hokkaido but arguably one of the best golf clubs in this region of Japan is Hokkaido Golf Club.\nIf you are travelling from outside Japan, you may be able to catch a direct flight to Sapporo Chitose Airport, which is Hokkaido’s only significant international airport. You will find direct flights from China, South Korea and Thailand but for those coming from Europe and United States, you will need to fly to Tokyo and get a short connecting flight.\nTravelling to Hokkaido to play golf is something every golfer should do at least once in their lifetime and Hokkaido Golf Club is a must on every Japan golf itinerary.\nHokkaido Golf Club is home to not one but two magnificent 18 hole golf courses. Each course has been designed to replicate a traditional Scottish and American golf course and they have been named Eagle Course and Lion Course.\nThe Eagle Course at Hokkaido Golf Club is a par-72 course which plays to 6,644 yards from the championship tees and 6,211 yards from the regular tees. This is the American style course and water is one of the main features throughout the 18 holes but is not over-whelming and can easily be avoided.\nWater hazards come into play on the first two holes, with both the right and left sides of the opening fairway protected by water. The approach to the green is clear of water on the first hole but the green on the second hole, which is a par-3, is protected by water to the front and left side.\nNegotiate these two holes and you are in an excellent position to make a good score on the Eagle Course.\nThe second course at Hokkaido Golf Club is called the Lion Course and this is reminiscent of a traditional Scottish links golf course.\nIf you do not like playing around water, you will want to choose the Lion Course as there is not a single water hazard in sight.\nHowever, the 18 holes feature significant undulations and mounding, with strategically placed bunkers throughout. Several of the greens are large but well protected by sand. Landing on the green in regulation does not mean you can relax as the putting is testing thanks to the breaks of the green.\nIn addition to two wonderful golf courses, Hokkaido Golf Club is home to a lovely, spacious club house with pro-shop, restaurant, locker room and swimming facilities. There is also a driving range for practice before you begin your round.\nHokkaido Golf Club offers two distinctly different rounds of golf and you should experience both when playing golf in Japan.\n\nempty

Hokkaido Brooks Country Club
Hokkaido Brooks Country Club, is an incredible design that incorporates every single aspect of the natural landscape, whilst generating a golf course that is a true test of golf and worthy of championship golf being played here. Designed by Ed Sneed and Taizo Kawata Hokkaido Brooks Country Club is a top destination that has the heart of each designer stamped all over it.\nSet in a massive 1.65 million square meters the 18 holes blends with the natural beauty of the landscape, creating two distinctive sets of 9-holes.\nThe front 9 is undulating and the holes are framed exquisitely by the Japanese Larch and white birch trees. A small brook runs throughout the course adding a tranquillity along with additional difficulty. The final 6 holes are more of a traditional Scottish links, than a parkland course as it opens out, with wide, rolling fairways, enormous bunkers and large undulating greens that somehow blend effortlessly with both the landscape and the front 9, and it is this effortless flow that really stands out when you visit Hokkaido Brooks Country Club.\nTo complete the incredible set-up is the luxurious, large clubhouse that caters for every single need, with large, spacious locker rooms, bright and airy restaurant and a well-stocked pro-shop with additional features for members. Hokkaido Brooks Country Club boasts superb driving range and putting green maintained to the same exacting standard as the golf course\n\nempty

Hitsujigaoka Country Club
Hitsujigaoka Country Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the Sapporo area and was built on the remains of the cross-country skiing courses used at the 1972 Winter Olympics. The course runs through the thick forest of birch trees which is typical of the area.\nThe course is pretty flat with not too many severe elevation changes. On the outward nine the holes are almost all dead straight with not too many bunkers so providing you are straight off the tee you should score well.\nThe inward nine is a bit more varied with a few doglegs and the pick of the holes is the par 5, 17th which is an S-shaped hole with a pond protecting the front of the green.\n\nempty

Enjoying wide fairways, flanked by trees and bunkers the tee shots are not overly demanding and although the course is long it rarely tests from the tee.\nCleverly positioned bunkers and the use of additional water hazards blend to provide some difficulty.\nThe South course is shorter at 6941-yards and also a par 72 but is similar in design. Moving over the gently undulating terrain it is an easy walk, and much like the North course relies on the well-positioned bunkers and water hazards to provide the style and challenge to the golfers.\nCourse conditions are always good and both courses are a joy to play.\n\nempty

Heavily wooded the holes cut their way through avenues of trees creating holes that are both narrow and intimate, building a sense of intrigue.\nThe designer has created a delightful course and has added water hazards where necessary, which only add to the beauty of naturalness of the course.\nWhite sand bunkers have been cleverly placed to provide both a visual distraction as well as a strategic headache. The 4th is a deceivingly tricky hole, requiring a well-placed drive to leave the perfect angle from which to attack the pin. Club selection is vital, the green has three distinctive tiers and finding the correct tier is paramount if you want to walk away with a par on this hole.\nAnother superb hole is the 8th, a par 5 measuring 553-yards from the back tee. Stay left to give yourself the easiest shot for both the second and third shots. Missing right here is not an option as the land is heavily undulating making an up and down unlikely.\nHole 13, may well be unlucky for some. Water comes into play from the tee requiring a pin-point accurate drive that sets up a mid-iron shot into the green. Heavily undulating missing the green is not an option.\nAs you arrive on the elevated tee of the par 3 15th you are welcomed by some incredible views of the hole and the entire golf course. Although the hole is only 168-yards long the beauty of the view might be enough to distract you from the pending challenge of the hole.\nThe general condition of Gozensui Golf Club is superb, with the maintenance team constantly working to maintain the standards. Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club
A hugely enjoyable par-3 course with stunning views overlooking the ocean, and the ideal place to tune up your short game The newest addition to the Bali golfing scene, having opening in 2016, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is located high up on top of the limestone cliffs near the Bukit Peninsula, offering wonderful views of the ocean and the breaking waves. It’s an unusual golf course in that it consists of 18 par-3 holes, but don’t mistake this as some cheap 'pitch & putt' course as it is maintained to very high standards. It’s an ideal golf course to play when you are on holiday as it offers panoramic views from all over the course.\nIt is a par 54 layout and most people get around in about two hours. There's enough water and sand in play to penalise wayward tee shots while providing a pleasing aesthetic contrast to the lush paspalum playing surfaces that ensure good year-round conditions, although the greens are fairly generous, which is a good thing given the swirling coastal winds.\nWhile you'll be taking a mid iron off most of the tees, there are a few shorter holes where you only need a nine-iron or a wedge, and two longer holes where you'll likely need a wood, with the 2nd hole playing to 244 yards from the back tees.\nThe most exciting hole is the signature 13th, which measures just under 150 yards and is surrounded by bunkers with curved stone walls in front and a ornate tower behind it. The rest of the golf course is extremely picturesque with dramatic rocky outcrops, terraced paddy fields and great views over the white-sand beaches.\nThe clubhouse is reminiscent of a Balinese temple but includes all of the facilities you expect including locker rooms, a pro shop and a number of restaurants and bars. As expected, the welcome and customer service is of a high standard. Overall, it's well worth the short trip from Nusa Dua for a round at Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club, as it'll prove a hugely enjoyable day out on your next golf holiday in Bali.\n\nempty

It also has its seaside holes, and it's these holes will be best remembered by visiting golfers. At the par-five 7th (voted best par 5 in Asia), the sea revealed to the golfer halfway down the fairway. From here, you get closer to the sea via the short dogleg 8th and then play along with it at the par-three 9th. This famous hole, photographed extensively, is a must-play hole requiring a medium iron played over the beach to an archipelago green. The last view of the sea is the par-four 10th, where the beach parallels the fairway.\nRia Bintan's Ocean Course conditioning and presentation is the best in Indonesia and is as good as the best courses in nearby Singapore. The course measures 6,470 meters from the championship tees.\nRia Bintan Golf Club has made it to the official ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses published by Golf Digest Magazine. Ria Bintan Golf club clinched first-winner awards in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2008 for Best Golf Course in Asia, Best Course in Indonesia, and Best Par 4 in Asia.\nOverall, Ria Bintan is one of the best course designs in Asia.\n\nempty

Laguna Golf Bintan
Laguna Golf Bintan set on 60-hectares on the shores of the Straits of Singapore. Initially designed by Greg Norman, the Bintan golf was brought up to modern standards in 2016 by Paul Jensen. All 18 green complexes revised, and bunkers have been reduced in number and better positioned to more strategic locations. Also, low maintenance features such as grass depressions, fairway tiers, and mounds have been added to enhance the playing strategy and shot variety. Wider fairways not only benefit average golfers but also open up new possibilities for serious golfers looking for birdie opportunities. However, accurate approach play is required to score well and avoid the longish grass found on most holes.\nThe Laguna Bintan layout, comprising two out-and-back 9-hole loops, is more undulating on the front-nine, flatter on the back, and contains some memorable holes. The golf course starts with unique sea views on the 2nd to 4th holes, then wraps around a series of lagoons on holes 6 to 8. The 9th is another challenging hole as it plays long and uphill back towards the clubhouse.\nThe back nine plays on the other side of the resort and opens with holes 10 to 15 playing through dense jungle and the unique rock outcroppings. The highlight of the golf course is the long par-4 sixteenth through the forest back towards the sea. The signature hole is the 17th. The spectacular and tough par-3 requires a shot across the beach, over an impressive rocky shore and onto a tree-surrounded and well-guarded green. The impact of this visually intimidating hole eased by the beautiful backdrop of the sea and the Banyan Tree Resort on the hillside.\nThe traditional Indonesian-style clubhouse sits at the highest point of the property and looks out over the golf course. Refurbished in 2016, it retains much of the tropical island design feel, modern luxuries and conveniences have been added to pamper all golfers. The terrace café offers a selection of local and international dishes catered as part of the Banyan Tree. A well-stocked pro shop has a decent selection of logoed golf apparel, supplies, and equipment.\n\nempty

The Vintage Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nAs one of 10 courses at Mission Hills, Hainan, The Vintage could not be better named. Sitting behind the more famous and well thought of courses of Lava Fields and Blackstone, The Vintage is somewhat overlooked, but with no good reason. It is a superb design, in a return to a bygone era of golf course design and it plays its part exceptionally well. One major difference, and the effect the modern era has had on the game, is the increase in length from years past. Measuring in at 7363 yards The Vintage is a tough course to tame.

Stone Quarry Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nIf you are looking for a Pete Dye design course at Mission Hills Hainan, you won´t find one, instead you will come across the Stone Quarry Course, designed by Brian Curley of Schmidt-Curley design, in honour of his mentor Pete Dye. And what a course he has created. Not to the same level as the Blackstone or Lava Fields tracks, but such a good test of golf that you just have to play it. At just 6029 yards the par 70, Stone Quarry course is short, but as you would expect from a Pete Dye inspired course the challenge lies within the intricacy of the design rather than the length.

Shadow Dunes Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nMission Hills, Hainan was an ambitious project in the first place, but the course that stands out as perhaps the most difficult and ambitious design of all is the Shadow Dunes Course. Not the longest course at the resort, Shadow Dunes comes in at 6428-yards and has a par of 70. Shadow Dunes, arguably has the most character, in terms of design and is the one course that seems to sit apart from the rest. So what makes this course so different? Well, to begin it required an immense amount of earth moving, placed on top of the volcanic lava formations, to create what seemingly is a natural beachside golf course.

Sandbelt Trails Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nConsidered by Brian Curley and the team at Mission Hills Hainan, Sandbelt Trails was modelled on the great Australian Sandbelt courses. A 7297-yard par 72 golf course, Sandbelt Trails provides golfers with a straightforward test of golf that is far from the difficulties posed by the Lava Fields or championship Blackstone courses here. The use of the natural vegetation and lava rocks provide a much-needed injection of style to this otherwise relatively flat and somewhat drab golf course, in comparison to the design and difficulty of the other Mission Hills Hainan.

Meadow Links Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nConsidered to be one of the more traditional styles of design at Mission Hills Hainan, Meadow Links is similar in style to that of the US Open courses found on the east coast. The use of native grasses and the care not to require too much earth moving in the construction phase has created a beautiful, gently undulating golf course that is easy on the eye and your game. Measuring just 6673 yards the Meadow course is not anywhere near as long as the other courses at Mission Hills and it is a welcome sight. Short it maybe, but challenging it still is. Being more open than the other designs, play is more affected by wind hence the name.

Lava Fields Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nLava Fields at Mission Hills Haikou has been designed to fit perfectly with its surroundings, yet the surroundings are further complimented by the golf course which is testament to the design by Curley and possibly the reason why I believe it to be the slightly better of the two courses. At 7475 yards from the back tees, it is more than capable of holding tour events although shorter than its sister course. Within the design features are the large, rugged and wild bunkers that merge seamlessly with the lava rock to create a visual feast for the eyes. Wider and more open, it is slightly more forgiving from the tee, but do not let this lead you into a false sense of security, if you do not bring you’re a-game to the course you will be punished and big numbers will appear on your scorecard.

Blackstone Golf Course Mission Hills
\n\nThe Blackstone course at Mission Hills on China´s Hainan Island is just one of 10 courses in the Mission Hills complex. Built on the black lava rocks the course is an absolute brute. At 7808 yards from the championship tees, length is definitely a big player here if you want to score well. Constructed on a 350-acre site, the course weaves its way through mature trees, jungle vegetation and natural wetlands to create what can only be described as a course designed for the natural terrain. Brian Curley, of Schmidt & Curley design was the designer and has crafted a true test of golfing ability. The challenge that the courses possesses was never in doubt with the 2011 World Cup being allocated to the course before construction was even completed.

Bali National Golf Club
\n\nWe played the original course at Bali National Golf Club many years ago and thought then that it was a great layout – indeed good enough to be voted by Fortune magazine as one of the Top Five Golf Courses in Asia back in 1997. Unfortunately the course went into a gradual decline and the decision was made to totally renovate the course. It turned out to be a great decision, as designers Nelson & Haworth created an entirely new course which is unrecognisable from the previous layout. Reopened in 2013 it has been receiving rave reviews and has won a host of awards, including the Asian Golf Awards gong for Best Renovated Course in Asia Pacific (2014) and Best Course in Indonesia (2018). The course sits right in the middle of the Nusa Dua Beach hotel complex and is very conveniently located for anyone staying in the area, and following the completion of the bypass road it is now only 15 minutes from the airport. The course offers a choice of four tee boxes, but unless you are a real masochist or a seriously good golfer then it’s probably best to have a relaxing round off the Resort tee boxes (equivalent to the white tees). The course is in immaculate condition, with hardly a blade of grass out of place. It’s a pleasure to play here – we loved the way they have used native grasses in front of some of the tee boxes and also around the bunkers, which really softens the look of the course. The greens are particularly challenging, lightning fast with plenty of undulations, so if putting is not your strong suit then you are in for a long day. Thankfully you can rely on the advice of the caddies, who are usually excellent here. The course is in immaculate condition, with hardly a blade of grass out of place. The front nine are played in amongst the trees but the back nine opens up a bit and the course finished on a really high note with two superb finishing holes. The 17th is a spectacular par 3 with an island green - the only solid ground is the tees boxes and the green, everything else is water. Just aim for the centre of the putting surface and pray! The 18th is a 400-yard dogleg par 4 with a waste bunker all along the left and a water hazard fronting the green; your approach will be made all the more difficult as you will probably have an audience watching on from the clubhouse as you finish. The clubhouse at Bali National Golf Club features outstanding locker rooms and a great restaurant and terrace overlooking the 18th green. There's also a driving range and you get a free bucket of 25 balls to use prior to your round. While it’s not cheap to play here, the price compares quite favourably to other top courses in Asia, and given the quality of the golf course and the beauty of the surroundings, it's worth every penny.

\n\nRon Fream of Golfplan laid out the course here at Pantai Mentiri Golf Club in 1983 and he would return again to Brunei before the decade was over to design and construct the Royal Brunei course, on the other side of the nation’s international airport. The layout plays to a par of 72 with water hazards involved at many of the holes on the card. The outward half, the Bakau nine, extends to 3,006 metres from the back markers – it’s considered to be the 'easier' nine – whilst the inward Membangan nine measures slightly longer at 3,099 metres.

Chengdu Wolong Valley International Golf Club
The layout is dominated by sand, and prior to our visit we were told there were as many as 400 traps across the course. While this figure is plainly untrue, there is enough sand for 400 bunkers as the traps built are enormous, and literally everywhere.\nThe great shame with Wolong Valley is that the obscene amount of sand tends to disguise what are otherwise nice, subtle golf shapes and holes.\nThere are some interesting greens here and some effective strategy in amidst all the sand, but it is hard to identify because of the sheer size of the hazards.\nThe bunkers themselves are rugged, well built and naturalistic in isolation, they are simply too prolific and spoilt conceptually by the fact that a course so full of sand looks anything but natural.\nPutting the sand to one side, highlights include a number of crested landing areas, the small, shapely putting greens and some of the more intimate individual bunkers.\nTraps short of the long par three 17th, for example, are unusually small for this course, but reasonably effective at framing the undersized, saddle green site.\nWhile we believe that Wolong Valley is likely the pick of the Chengdu golf courses, it certainly could have been better with a little more restraint shown during design and construction.\n\nOne of the lesser known but better quality courses in the Sichuan region of southwestern China, the Chengdu Wolong Valley golf course was designed by American Rick Jacobson and first opened for play in 2012.
